As a future teacher, I think it is important to be wary of giving students a single story when teaching them. By teaching multiple stories in a classroom, the classroom will become more inclusive. I think it is important to not have a single story of the students in your classroom. There is so much going on in a student’s life once they leave school at the end of the day and teacher’s need to account for that rather than expecting students to only be students and nothing else during a school day. Also, it is important that teachers do not bring their biases or stereotypes into a classroom in order to provide all students with a proper education. Therefore, teachers need to constantly be checking if they have created for themselves a single story about any group of people.

I loved how you included that a student's life also happens outside of the classroom, which is important to understand how a student can function in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteAll children and youth need literature that offers mirrors (one can see oneself) and windows (one can see the experiences of others). This is an important element of having a balanced experience.
